SOCIAL EXPERIMENT PRESENTS: A GIANT AMONG US with DJ BIG JACKS!

January 27, 2009

Back in November, we had a raucous time with our peoples DJ Royale and his grand return to the mixing stage. Now we’re showing love to the other half of Grand Groove: Black Rap’s very own Big Jacks!

Y’all might have seen him doing his thing for the ladies at Aritzia on a random Saturday afternoon, or have heard him on his radio shows: Mondays with Backroad Radio (CHRY 105.5) or Mixtape Massacre (CKLN, 88.1) on Saturdays. Y’all might have caught him tear down the jam alongside Neil Armstrong or with his Black Rap mans’n’em Bozack Morris at their signature “Swerve” parties, or might have bumped one of his many mixed CD’s. At any rate, if you haven’t heard of Big Jacks by now, you must be new to Toronto and/or to music in general. He’s a staple in the local hip-hop scene for the past decade, one of the hardest working DJ’s in the city, and a name with a stock value that can only go up. His is a musical experience not to be missed.

Ladies and gents, you are now listening to the sounds of Big Jacks!

Soc. Exp. presents THROW DOWN SOME ICE: The “Notorious” Movie Release Party This Thursday

January 13, 2009

This week, Social Experiment, in conjunction with Warner Urban, celebrates the life of Biggie Smalls, and the release of the biopic “Notorious,” in theatres this Friday

Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious B.I.G., fit all the criteria that earned him the distinction of “icon”. A lyrical phenom upon his arrival in ’93, he set his sights high, putting Brooklyn on the map, and hip-hop at the top of the charts. He talked slick and lived lavishly, not leaving a moment wasted. He lived a very fast life, experienced the highs and low of stardom, and was always surrounded by controversy. Gunned down on March 9, 2007, he departed this earth way too soon, but left with him a legacy that retains his relevance in the hip-hop community, 12 years after his death.

In the spirit of all this, Social Experiment pays homage to the best who ever did it, with an extended tribute set, including his many hits, album cuts, guest verses, and rarities.

Raise your glasses as we toast the Notorious Glorious… B.I.G.

THE MAIN INGREDIENT this month…featuring RICH MEDINA!!!

January 9, 2009

The Academy and Shaman Fam bring to you The Main Ingredient, a monthly party featuring an array of soul based music. There are a lack of soul dedicated events in Toronto, which are not either R&B, house, or World music dedicated events. The Main Ingredient will pull soulful influences from various eras, regions and music genres. With a reputation locally for creating highly unique events, The Academy and Shaman Fam will cater to Toronto soul fans that have few outlets to enjoy great soul music in the city.

The month of January 2009 will see The Main Ingredient join forces with North America wide event platform FUSICOLOGY and Toronto based floor rockers the FOOTPRINTS crew, to present The Black President. This event will celebrate the life and music Fela Anikulapo Kuti presented by Rich Medina (The Black Present a 1981 album by Fela Kuti) and his traveling party brand Jump & Funk, as well as the January 20th inauguration of United States President Barack Obama.

Jump & Funk (presented by Rich Medina, Philadelphia)

Originating as a partnership party brand in 2001, Jump & Funk was created as a tribute to Fela Anikulapo Kuti and the Afrobeat genre which he presented to the international masses throughout his career. Originally established by highly regarded Philly deejay Rich Medina, Debbie Sealy, and Trevor Schoonmaker, the party received praise and success between 2002 and 2006, including annual appearance at The Winter Music Conference in Miami. The exit of both Sealy and Schoonmaker retired the party in 2006, however Rich Medina decided to rejuvenate the brand in the fall of 2008 in time for Kuti birthday celebrations in Philly, New York and Washington DC.
